My name is Mitch Short, and I was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy. I’ve been confined to a wheelchair for the last 12 years. Now, I’d like to start exercising, using a handcycle.
In addition to my swimming and standing (using a device donated about a year ago), this will help me towards my ultimate goal of walking again.
Even if you can’t donate, I’d greatly appreciate you sharing my situation on Facebook or Twitter to let other people know. Every bit helps!
I was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, called Friedrich’s Attaxia, and I have been confined to a wheelchair for 12 years now.
I have fought this degenerative disease by tackling it head on by eating well, exercising often, and completing exhaustive physical therapy.
About a year ago, I reached out to some extremely generous people who helped me purchase an Easy Stand. This device has changed my life in tremendous ways for the better, and I’m extremely grateful to them for their generosity.
Originally, I’d planned to get a mobile modification for the Stander, but due to my height and the placement of the footplates that mobile adaptation will not be possible.
Now, I have decided to purchase instead a hand-cycle or the Invacare Top End Force CC.
My intermediate goal is to train and participate in the 2014 Bearathon (a half-marathon in Waco, TX) with the handcycle. I am nowhere near ready now, but with a year to train, I am confident I will get there. I will provide regular updates on here of my progress.
